Sharing In God

Being “in Christ” is a favorite phrase of Paul. He speaks constantly of how we are united with God in Christ through the Spirit. As followers of Jesus we imitate him and become participants in God by sharing in God’s work in the world. That work is what Jesus called the coming kingdom.

As a community pursuing life in Christ through the Spirit, we seek to engage with God in how he is at work in the world, which is always through his transformative and redemptive moving of selfless love.

What we want to do in the coming weeks is enter into a time of prayer and openness, in which we will ask what call we might have from God for how to join in his work in our world. Is there a particular way in which we, in this moment, can together share God’s love?

These weeks will be a time to listen, to set aside preconceived ideas we may have in order to be open to what we may sense is God’s leading.

Below you may post comments about your own listening in prayer. After Easter, will have a time for discernment, when together we will search for how the Spirit is speaking in the various things we will have heard.

    During Lent, I have been contemplating the wilderness experience and how God is faithful during it. My ministry has been deeply impacted by my body as pain often discourages me from doing things I want to do. I have been in a season of letting go, of smallness. What that involves in prayer is me spending time with Jesus, and trying to let him with me examine my heart and mixed motives. It is such a divided heart, full of wrong desires. Nevertheless, I do want His kingdom to come in whatever way he invites me to join him. These days, it is mostly prayer, study, and writing.

    I have been praying the song, “I Sing Jesus.” (I’ve put the words below.) As I go through the words of this song, I use my imagination to look for the places in the world and in my closer community that need the reality of a God/Jesus/Spirit who loves and who intercedes for his children. I grieve as I pray. Come Lord Jesus into our deepest needs and give us a revelation of Jesus. Truth and goodness are revealed in Christ: redemption and justice, mercy, grace, humility, relief to all those who are suffering. When I sing this, I find myself having a deeper heart of mercy toward all who suffer through their own sins, or the sins of others against them. We are a broken but loved people.

    Whatever God is doing during this season for me, I am encouraged to believe that God is providing water in the wilderness. God provided for Hagar, he provided for Moses, he provided for Paul, Elijah, and even those who were martyred. That he loves it when I bare my heart and soul to him, and that his ways are always the best. I am like Hagar in the wilderness trusting that God hears and sees and has plans–whether I can see them or not.
