One text for Sunday is Isaiah 1:10-20, which we plan to disregard by going ahead with our regular Sunday gathering. Seriously, we will!
We will also read from Hebrews 11, specifically on the faith of Abraham (vs 8-16).
Finally, we find some possible connection with the Gospel reading, Luke 12:32-40, which calls for watchfulness. Perhaps the architects of the lectionary want us to realize that readiness/watchfulness is not being present at religious convocations, but emulating the faith of Abraham.
The truly astounding part of the Lukan reading is the story of the master who will be so delighted upon his return by the readiness of his servants, that he will change into servant clothes and wait on them! This is no parable drawn from Jewish life but pure fantasy! Roles reversed at the advent of the lord.
What does it mean to watch for a master who will humble himself to do the unthinkable? Should we be surprised, because what we know of this Master is that such humility and service is his hallmark!
